Let’s Celebrate World Rainforest Day 2019!

Picture yourself in an alluring rainforest. Think of the marvelous sights and sounds... You’ve probably witnessed these luscious surroundings in movies such as ‘Avatar’ and ‘The Jungle Book’. Maybe you’ve been lucky enough to visit a rainforest. One thing’s for sure - rainforests are a treasure.

“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”

- Sir David Attenborough

When is World Rainforest Day?

Celebrated on June 22nd each year, World Rainforest Day is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the world’s rainforests.

Rainforests are crucial for Earth’s survival. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen that we depend on. This absorption of CO2 also keeps Earth’s climate stabilized.

Furthermore, rainforests provide a lot of the freshwater we drink. They are also the homes of many indigenous peoples and wildlife species.

What steps can we take to tackle deforestation?

1. Plant trees

A valuable way to restore ecosystems is by planting trees on land where forests have been cut down. This is something particularly close to the heart of Click & Grow. Planting trees helps to fight global warming and climate change while preserving the Earth's ecosystems.

2. Go paperless

As technology advances, there’s less need for us to print documents. Still, old habits die hard. Let’s think twice before clicking ‘print’. Whenever possible, we can store documents electronically on computers and cloud storage systems.

3. Use recycled products

By using items made from recycled paper, you are making an effort to lower the demand for timber. It also means you’re supporting recycling facilities and lowering the amount of waste at landfills.

4. Avoid products containing palm oil

Palm oil is possibly one of the biggest contributors to deforestation and it’s found in so many products we use. Much of the world’s palm oil comes from Indonesia and Malaysia, where the virgin rainforest is being rapidly cleared. If it’s too difficult to stop using certain products that contain palm oil, we can at least try an alternative that has a sustainable palm oil certification.

5. Support organizations that combat deforestation

There are several international organizations wanting to put an end to deforestation. Examples include Rainforest Alliance, World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, and Conservation International. Check out their websites, make donations and / or volunteer your time to help the cause.

By working together to raise awareness, we can make a difference. Use the hashtags #WorldRainforestDay, #TakeABreath, and #ThankARainforest to show your support.
