4+ Oregano Facts You Didn't Know

Oregano

Up there together with Mini Tomato, Chili Pepper, Moss Rose, Wild Strawberry, Petunia, Peppermint and Catnip, Oregano is one of the most loved Smart Herb Garden refills. And just when we all thought we know everything there is about this special little plant...it turned out we don't. Here's 4 things (and a little more) you most probably didn't know about the so-called “Mountain delight”!

1. In collaboration with cheese and tomato sauce, it makes pizza a pizza

There is no pizza without oregano. “But there's basil and th…” No. Oregano is the only herb adds that something extra to this world's favorite dish - the little kick, the aroma, the sentiment. The “pizzaness”, if you will. No Oregano, no pizza. It's a classic. This is our favorite recipe yet.

2. It has 4 times the antioxidants of blueberries

We're always astonished when we check the nutritional information charts for herbs. How can these tiny green leaves have so much in them?! I've you've ever seen an Oregano plant, you'll be surprised about this as well: 100g Oregano contains 159% of your daily intake of Calcium and whopping 204% of your daily intake of Iron, and a whole lot of Magnesium and vitamins K and B-6. Not to even mention its antioxidant content - Oregano contains 4 times the antioxidants of blueberries, 42 times the antioxidants of apples and 12 times the antioxidants of oranges! All this sounds more like a job for some supernut, not a tiny green leaf, doesn't it?

3. It let Ancient Greeks know who is going to be their special someone

Ancient Greeks were nuts for Oregano. They made Oregano laurels for brides and grooms, they used it to get poisons out of their systems, and check this - they even believed that the cows that gazed in fields full of Oregano had tastier meat! When they weren't checking out cows or trying to clean up the mess after someone had again poisoned someone, they rubbed themselves with Oregano before bed. No, not to sleep better or smell nice, but to dream who their future spouse is gonna be…

4. It's so popular, it once even started a war

Ironically, this herb that is considered to be the symbol of joy, once started a war! Yes, Oregano war. No, we're not kidding.

Seems like a pretty cool little fella, doesn't it? Try growing some in your Smart Herb Garden and use the leaves to make tea that those good ol' Greeks used to drink to get over someone. Tinder, you've got yourself some competition.
